Method of Payment: Debit Card

People staying at inns and bed and breakfasts enjoy the convenience of being able to use debit cards as an online payment method. Debit cards or check cards give guests electronic access to their bank accounts and allow them to pay for stays at inns or bed and breakfasts. In order to accept debit card payments, inns and B&Bs usually make use of a debit card processing provider who charge nominal processing fees as a way of doing business.

With the acceptance of debit cards, InnPayment provides you and your guests with a convenient method of payment. Accepting debit card payments alleviates the inconvenience of paper checks. InnPayment has years of experience offering customizable, scalable, and flexible payment methods, including the ability to accept debit card payments. Being able to easily accept online debit card payments buys you the time you need to concentrate on your business.

The Debit Card Process

Online payments for stays at inns and bed and breakfasts are usually processed in a few seconds, however a lot goes on behind the scenes.

Step 1: Guest Chooses Debit Card as the Online Payment Method

The guest chooses to pay for a stay in an inn or bed and breakfast via the InnPayment site, a payment app or other payment channel. After selecting debit card as the payment method, the guest gives their name, debit card information and address, and then submits payment. This starts the backend process.

Step 2: The Payment Gateway & Merchant Account

The InnPayment payment gateway, the frontend and interface of online payment processing, forwards transaction details such as name, address, debit card number, Card Verification Value (CVV) security code and the amount to its merchant acquirer, aka the payment processor.

Step 3: Payment Processor & Debit Card Networks (A)

The payment processor (merchant acquirer) authenticates the payment details by routing them through the debit card networks (Visa, MasterCard), which then forward them to the card’s issuing bank for verification.

Step 4: Debit Card Issuing Bank

The guest’s card-issuing bank approves or denies payment transaction for the inn or B&B charges based on the status of the card (active, stolen, or within credit limit). Then, the bank sends the results back to the debit card networks. If payment is approved, the card issuing bank charges the guest and relays the funds to the debit card networks less interchange fees that cover the assumed credit risk and rewards given to the customer for using the card as the method of payment.

Step 5: Payment Processor & Debit Card Networks (B)

The debit card networks convey the transaction approved/denied status to the payment processor and send the funds minus a fee. Now, the payment processor lets the InnPayment payment gateway know whether the transaction has been approved or denied, and sends the funds for approved payments less merchant acquirer service charges.

Step 6: Payment Gateway & Merchant Account (B)

The InnPayment payment gateway informs the inn or bed and breakfast guest if the transaction was approved or denied via the online payment interface. InnPayment sends funds for approved payments less fees. If the method of payment is not accepted, InnPayment’s payment gateway sends the information back to the site or app and payment processing grinds to a halt.

Step 7: Payment

At this point, the money needs to be transferred from the merchant account to the inn or B&B’s bank account. Because the inn or bed and breakfast is a partner with an InnPayment sub-merchant account, the payment gateway deposits the net payment into the partner’s bank account. Once payment processing is completed, a confirmation screen displays that payment was successful and a receipt is emailed to the guest.
